Designer Gary Blake answers his most frequently asked design questions:
Q. I want my room to reflect my personal style so why should I use a designer?
A. A good designer will listen for cues that reveal your personal likes and dislikes and will not force his or her own style on you. A designer is someone who will help you discover your own style and ensure that it is properly interpreted. By applying the principles of design you can be assured the result will not only be beautiful but will be a reflection of who you are.
Q. Is a focal point necessary in every room?
A. Absolutely. Without a focal point a room lacks purpose. Many rooms already have a focal point such as a fireplace, media center or view. If there is none present one can be created by adding a key piece to the room such as a painting, piano or antique chest or armoire. Having a focal point gives a reason for the type of furniture needed and its placement.
Q. When should I involve a designer?
A. The sooner the better. If you are building or remodeling, a designer should be part of planning process. Planning the room layout before it is ever constructed can help to identify placement of electrical outlets, lighting, speaker wiring, etc. and save costly mistakes. Also the designer will help identify the style and colors for the room so that the selection of building materials will coordinate.
Q. I've got white walls but am afraid of color. What should I do?
A. Don't be afraid of color on your walls. It can literally transform your room. Use wall color to pick up other colors in fabrics or rugs. Against a white wall darker wood furniture and rich color upholstery is often too much of a contrast. By painting the walls a deeper color your room will look warm and inviting.
Q. Should I decorate a hallway?
A. Every area of your home offers an opportunity to reflect your style. Hallways can be cold and bare if left without any decoration. Break up a long hallway by adding a patterned runner. Walls in hallways are perfect places for a collection of family photos. And, don't forget about lighting. Consider a smaller chandelier or recessed spot lighting to highlight photos or artwork.
